NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — There were reports of arrests at a protest outside Gov. Andrew Cuomo's Midtown Manhattan office Wednesday.

The protest was organized by the group VOCAL-NY to demand the governor's immediate resignation "to make way for leadership that will tax the rich and fund the needs of New Yorkers."

The protest also drew attention to homelessness and overdose deaths in the state.

"Cuomo has failed New Yorkers. He has harmed millions of vulnerable people through public policy — and harmed women in his personal life. His leadership has failed," the group wrote in a tweet.

Protesters gathered outside the governor's Third Avenue office carrying banners that read "Cuomo Cancelled New York" and chanting, "Andrew Cuomo you should quit, New York needs new leadership."

"New York did not cancel Gov. Cuomo. Gov. Cuomo canceled New York. Gov. Cuomo canceled nursing home death data," one protester said at the event. "Cuomo cares only about himself. We need the New York State Assembly and Senate to step up to take action to take charge to tell Gov. Cuomo to step back. We need new leadership now."

Several people were seen being taken away in handcuffs after the group blocked traffic on Third Avenue near 40th Street.

The protest comes as the governor faces investigations into sexual harassment allegations and COVID-19 nursing home deaths.
