Bail Out Black Mamas this Mother’s Day in NYC!
For the third year, VOCAL-NY is honored to participate in National Bail Out's Black Mama's Bail Out Day! All over the country, communities are coming together to show love and support to our Black mothers who are separated from their families because of the punitive cash bail system. Here in NYC, we're trying to raise $50,000 to bail out as many mamas as possible!
Here in New York City, the cash bail system locks our communities up for weeks, months, even years simply because they do not have the ability to pay sky-high bails. Meanwhile, bail bonds companies take advantage of those who are most vulnerable. Thanks to actions taken in Albany, cash bail will apply to many fewer New Yorkers this time next year--however, we must keep fighting to make sure that those reforms are fully enacted, and that we push further to completely and justly abolish the cash bail system once and for all.
We need to raise $50,000 by May 10th to pay the bail of as many mamas as we can. Please join us and help to bring a Black mother home to her family!
This fundraising effort is inspired by and in partnership with National Bail Out's Black Mama's Bailout, a Black-led and Black-centered collective of abolitionist organizers, lawyers, and activists building a community-based movement to: (1) support our folks, (2) end systems of pretrial detention, and (3) ultimately end mass incarceration.
